San Fransisco

Presidents Day weekend me and four of my friends decided it would be fun to go San Francisco! Seriously I love in love with that city.
We did so much in those four days:
-We stayed by Fishermans Warf which is right by the bay and filled with places to eat and lots of shopping. The bread bowls were insanely good and if anyone goes i recommend you stop by the sour dough restaurant. ITS BOMB!
-Obviously we went to the Golden Gate Bridge. It was so beautiful, but the walk across the bridge was freezing and windy. And I wore sandals so my feet were killing me haha so I'm dumb for that. After walking the bridge we walked to a small town called Salalito, right on the other side of the hill. That was for sure my favorite day just because we had so much fun taking pictures and sight seeing.
-Th next day was full of shopping!!! We rode the cable car and held on to the rails on the outside like typical tourists. Downtown was surprisingly clean and all the shops were amazing. We went to Macy's, Nike, H&M,  and a bunch more! That day we also ate at this place called "Cod Mother Fish & Chips." It was seriously the best thing I have ever eaten!

I can honestly say that the trip wouldn't have been as fun if I didn't have great company! WE laughed so much and are now planning a beach trip after the semester! YAYAYA traveling with friends is seriously the best!

The First Vision

Obviously at BYU you are required to take a certain amount of religion courses but I recently wrote about the first vision, a topic which really interested me as a convert! The idea the God put all of his work on a young boy truly amazes me so here is a little of what i wrote about! Again sorry my posts have been lengthy but these are just things that I truly care about!

Many events have shaped Latter-day Saint’s history, but the first vision was undoubtedly the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This event was the turning point for religion and the restoration of Jesus Christ during the great Apostasy. Even though Joseph Smith was unsure about his religious path, he received an answer in the first vision that helped him establish the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and restore the true gospel on earth.
After the death of Jesus Christ and his Apostles, the world was in a state of darkness. Priesthood authority was lost and the truth of the gospel was taken from the earth, causing a “spiritual darkness.”  The prophet Amos stated “a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” This prophecy was true and those who wanted to follow Christ’s teachings, no longer had the ability to. Many people tried to preach a message of faith and get as many followers as they could, but all of them were missing something. Each new church that was being formed had bits and pieces of the gospel but none had it in fullness. This issue caused a young Joseph Smith to question each religion and also question which one he should join.
As a young boy, Joseph Smith was searching for complete truth in a single religion and looked towards heavenly father for guidance. He found that many of the churches already established had some truth but none of them were complete. Each religion was missing something. The young, 14 year old boy was “Concerned by his sins and unsure which spiritual path to follow, he sought guidance by attending meetings, reading scriptures, and praying.” It was important that Joseph got baptized into the church he knew brought complete truth to the world. Joseph didn’t know this yet, but him surviving typhoid fever not only blessed the Smith family, but also would soon bless the entire world. He survived an epidemic that “caused more than 3,000 deaths in the New England area.” Leading up to the first vision, Joseph kept an open mind and truly searched for guidance in every way he knew how.
Joseph kept reading the bible so he could have some clarity on what his religious path should be. As he read through the scriptures one day, he noticed a passage that said, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and unbraideth not: and it shall be given him.” This passage really made Joseph think about God and if he asked, would God give him an answer? In Joseph Smith’s encounter he says, “at length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God.” And that is exactly what Joseph Smith did on the beautiful spring morning of 1820 in the grove near his house in Palmyra, New York. He knelt down and prayed for wisdom and guidance from the Lord and received revelation unlike he has ever experienced before. He speaks of the encounter and says “Immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction.”  This was the adversary trying to destroy Joseph because he knew that great work was about to be done.
What happened next was the first step in restoring The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph then saw a pillar of light above his head, and descended until it fell upon him. Joseph Smith describes this experience saying, “It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other- This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!.” After this Joseph asked which of the religions was right and which one he should join. The Lord answered by telling Joseph that none of the religions were the right one. The Lord said they each had some “form of godliness,” but they denied “the power thereof.” Joseph was also forgiven of his sins and told “walk in my  statutes and keep my commandments behold I am the  Lord of glory I was crucifyed for the world that all those  who believe on my name may have Eternal life.” After this, Joseph was told more things that would help guide him in the direction to restore the church on the earth.
Joseph Smith was chosen for a reason and Heavenly Father had a specific plan for him to bring the teachings of the true gospel back to earth. This first vision was just the start of many that Joseph would have in his lifetime. Although he was a young boy at the time, he understood his responsibility to spread the world and do the Lord’s work so that future generations could be blessed with the teachings from The Church of Jesus Christ  of Latter-day Saints.

A Date Which will Live in Infamy

This one is a little longer than usual but this is my rhetorical analysis that I wrote on the attack of Pearl Harbor. Hope you enjoy!

Is The United States of America truly known for their strength and determination to stand by our righteous beliefs? As Americans we have had many surprise attacks and each time we come back stronger and more united as a country. The attack on Pearl Harbor is no exception and is an infamous event that changed American history during World War 2. This event was the turning point in America’s involvement in the war.  In Franklin D. Roosevelt’s address to the nation after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he effectively expresses America’s relationship with Japan pre and post attack with logic, ethics, nationalism with emotion, logic with the repercussions that will occur after this surprise ambush, and ethics.
Roosevelt starts his speech off powerful and gives American citizens informative evidence on the current situation. The first sentence of his speech states, “Yesterday, December 7,1941- a date which will live in infamy- the United States was suddenly and deliberately attacked by the naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.” This was most definitely a turning point in American history. America had limited involvement in WWII until this surprise attack. Roosevelt’s word usage is important in this speech due to America’s fragile state. Preceding his dominant introduction, he expands on the fact that America was at peace with Japan prior to this horrific event. Roosevelt states that US was still “in conversation with Japan’s government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in public.” Obviously Japan wanted to blind side the American nation, giving President Roosevelt the idea he didn’t need to worry about Japan as a threat. Logically Roosevelt speaks to the citizens of America in the beginning of his speech to inform America of their prior and post stance with Japan.
President Roosevelt express his emotions towards this surprise attack and how we as Americans will respond. As stated before America was at peace with Japan and had no idea that for months they were planning to destroy America’s base in Hawaii. One hour after Japan began to attack Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Ambassador delivered a formal reply to the Secretary of State stating, “it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or armed attack.” This message was deliberately sent at this time so government leaders would have no idea that at that point Pearl Harbor had been attacked. Roosevelt goes on to say “it will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago.” This statement gives a sense of pride for ones country, as well as the feeling of betrayal. The idea that Japan planned out this attack and pretended to be at peace with America was emotional for President Roosevelt and he conveyed that in his speech. This attack was one of the first to show the United States that no matter the governmental stance between nations, we always need to be ready to protect our country.
Roosevelt then alters his speech to explain the effects of this attack and convay a more somber appeal. He does this by explaining the severe damage Pearl Harbor is facing and how many American lives were lost in this tragic event. He also states, “American ships have been torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.” Explaining more detail about the events that actually occurred will then open the eyes of American citizens and give them an idea of the United States involvement in World War II. Roosevelt started out the speech strong and is now starting to add more emotion to evoke the people. He goes on to explain that Japan has also “launched attacks against Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine Islands, Wake Island, and Midway Island.”  He does this simply to show that America will conquer Japan with the help of all the other countries that are also facing tragedies. Uniting and having support is very important during wartime and it was curial that Americans felt like they could win the war if they united. Roosevelt does an excellent job of putting an opinion in the peoples minds and pursading them to feel a sense of nationalism throughout his speech.
Next, Roosevelt goes on to inform the country that opinions on the matter are already forming and new notions will be occurring. He says, “The facts of yesterday speak for themselves.” Before this speech was made, people were forming their own opinions and Roosevelt only enhanced those emotions through his powerful word usage and appeal to the nation. He continues on by appealing to emotion in his statement, “people of the United States well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.” He uses this to emotion to express concern and warn the people that this is only the beginning. This is America’s ticket into World War II and unifying will only help in proceeding to victory.
As commander of the Army and Navy, Roosevelt has the authority to declare America’s involvement in the war and in order to ensure the safety of American citizens he will undoubtedly do so. This is a time when America was venerable and needed reassurance that nothing like this would happen again. Roosevelt declares, “As commander in chief of the Army and navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. Always will we remember the character of the onslaught against us.” It is crucial that as president, Roosevelt converts the people and shows his leadership. He does exactly that in this speech and appeals to them with emotion and logic. Stating that America will retaliate but also expressing his remorse for the lives lost.  With his appeal, he is showing that no matter how hard another country can try to undermine America, they will always come back fighting. Ensuring American’s safety is something Roosevelt continually does throughout the speech and continues to enhance patriotism.
Roosevelt’s stance on defending his country is portrayed in the next part of his speech as he engages more in-depth about retaliation and America’s next step. Roosevelt speaks with supremacy when he says, “No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through absolute victory.” This statement is powerful and gives hope to a nation that has just faced complete tragedy. He goes on to say that America will defend them and “will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again.” Roosevelt reinforces the idea that, yes-Pearl Harbor was a tragic event, but America will not rest until the Japanese Empire is immobilized. Roosevelt also adds in that he has much confidence in America’s armed forces and states that American “will gain the inevitable triumph.” Roosevelt’s message is clear that America will fight back stronger than ever before and with vengeance.
Throughout Franklin D. Roosevelt’s post Pearl Harbor attack speech to the nation, he expresses not only the facts of the event but also what the future holds for America by relating different types of emotion. Roosevelt is consistent in this speech by tying together logic, emotion, and ethics to convey his message. He was able to thoroughly express his stance on the situation and bring hope to American citizens. Not only did Roosevelt speak formally as the president, but he let the people know that he will do whatever it takes to keep the nation safe from something like this happening again.

Atonement

In between classes today I thought it would be interesting to watch some old conference talks and see if anything jumped out at me to write on my blog. Quickly I became intrigued with Elder Packer's talk titled "The Reason for Our Hope."
All members know the importance of the atonement but Elder Packer goes into more detail about how the atonement can be used every single day. He referred to a women who was upset about something and wanted vengeance. That is not a feeling from Heavenly Father, but from the adversary. Everything happens for a reason and when we get those feelings, we need to remember that God's plan is more important than how we feel right now.
Using the atonement to find happiness and peace is a true blessing and shouldn't be taken for granted. We were given this gift and should use it as often as we can! The gift of hope as Elder Packer refers to it as and it truly brings so much hope to my life!

Trail & Prayer

It seems the past few months for me have been filled with one trial after the other… Don’t get me wrong I am so thankful for every blessing in my life but it seems like every time I think I’m in the clear, something else happens. Everyone probably has something that they are going through but one thing every single person can do is pray to our heavenly father.

Its taken me a long time to understand the importance of praying but once I did and used it correctly, I noticed so many changes in my life! I noticed that even when I felt down, somewhere in my mind, I knew that this would lead me to something better. Remembering that each and every one of us has a path that heavenly father has set for us is so important. I know that after one trial is over it will lead me to something great, but I also know that it wont be my last. Struggling and making mistakes is what shapes us into the people we are supposed to be. I might not know why everything is happening the way it is now, but I know I will look back and see my growth!

If you are not one to put complete trust in Heavenly Father, or ever have doubts, I strongly suggest you pray with an open heart and I promise you will find true happiness.
